No. We are selective based on content and quality of the broadcast. The broadcast must provide a postive entertainment or informational value, and must present itself in a professional manner.
I am just getting started as a web broadcaster. Does SMN accept new shows?
Yes, we accept new shows. The length of time your show has been in production is not necessarily indicative of its professionalism. So long as your show meets our basic standards, we do not care if it is new, or has been in production for 20 years.
Does SMN have any restrictions on the shows' content?
Yes. We do not allow any content that is anti-American, or that promotes the violent overthrow of the American government, or any other government. We also do not allow excessive profanity, and SMN is the final discerner of what constitutes excessive profanity.
Other than that, there are generally no restrictions. Do be aware that we are sensitive to the audience as are all broadcast entities. If the audience complains loudly and persistently about your show, we will have to talk.
What makes SMN's audience-building advice so expert?
The primary source of that advice comes from Kevin Smith. When he started his show in 2000, he was in Kosovo. He e-mailed radio consultants in the USA and was advised that his show did not "have a prayer" of success because he was broadcasting only on the internet.
He may not have had a prayer, but he also did not have a choice. The internet was the only possibility for him to broadcast from Kosovo. So, he had to find ways to make it work. He had to discover by long, hard, expensive, trial and error how to build an audience.
Now, on any given night, his audience tends to be larger than most terrestrial radio stations. In fact, his audience is larger in its time slot that the entire listenership of many multi-channel web radio networks. If he says something works, it does. If he says something is a waste of time and money, it is.
You will be set up on PayPal for automatic billing. Each month, your credit or debit card will be automatically charged the contracted fee. Should you use services over and above the contracted services, they will be billed to you and an invoice will be mailed. You may pay that invoice via PayPal.
If you choose not to use PayPal, we can make arrangements for your to be billed via e-mail and you may pay by check. There is a 5% handling fee added for this method.
If I want to start broadcasting on SMN, how long does it take to get me set up and "on-air"?
This can usually be accomplished within 24 hours. It can sometimes be accomplished in less time. It depends upon your knowledge and skill with your broadcasting software.
